Collecting Vintage Guitars

Most of us would never have thought that the humble guitar might become a better investment than the stock market. Collecting Vintage Guitars is the hot item for collectors at the moment.

In a recent sale, George Harrison’s guitar sold for almost six hundred thousand dollars.  For example, Eric Clapton’s Stratocaster sold for nearly a million dollars. Although the collection of celebrity items has been a good investment for many years, vintage guitars themselves have been largely ignored.

Guitars manufactured between 1930 and 1960, are very collectable. Of course a lot depends on make, model and condition. There is a growing group that in 50 to 100 years times, guitars from the mid-20th century will be worth as much as mid 17 century violins are worth today. Absolutely amazing!!

Every knows of a guitar legend, so the value of these vintage guitars can only keep on increasing in value. The 1959 Sunburst Fender Stratocaster ( a very popular guitar of its time, initially selling for $250), could sell for $70,000 today. Even though the stock market has been up and down over the past decade or so, the price of vintage guitars has steadily increased.

A good vintage guitar collection will cover all types of guitars from  acoustic, electric, exotic, antique, vintage, modern, and even custom guitars.

So What Makes a Vintage Guitar?

Usually its the type of material the guitar was made from, as these days manufactures are unable to use the old materials either becuase of supply limitations or because the use of some of these materials is now suspended, an example of this that since 1969, Brazilian resewood is no-longer available for the production of Fender vintage guitars.
